Судебный процесс (1925) в г. Дейтоне [Dayton], шт. Теннесси, над школьным учителем Дж. Скопсом [Scopes, John T.], который был обвинен в нарушении закона штата [monkey laws], запрещавшего преподавать эволюционную теорию Дарвина в муниципальных школах [public school]. Скопса защищал известный адвокат К. Дэрроу [Darrow, Clarence Seward], приглашенный Американским союзом гражданских свобод [American Civil Liberties Union]; незадолго до процесса он выступал с публичным протестом против принятия "обезьяньих законов". В качестве обвинителя был приглашен не менее известный политик, один из лидеров Демократической партии, идеолог протестантского фундаментализма У. Брайан [Bryan, William Jennings]. К их дебатам о незыблемости библейского учения (в частности, о происхождении человека от Бога) было приковано внимание всей страны. Моральная победа в споре была одержана Дэрроу, но Скопс был признан виновным и оштрафован на 100 долларов, хотя Верховный суд штата под благовидным предлогом вскоре отменил приговор. Этим событиям был посвящен знаменитый фильм С. Крамера [Kramer, Stanley] "Пожнешь бурю" ["Inherit the Wind"] (1960).
